Hair thinning shears have one blade with teeth and one without. If you look closely at the blade with teeth, you will notice that there are small, evenly spaced grooves.
Whilst thinning shears are slightly different from texturising scissors, they both remove hair without losing the length or shape of the haircut. Thinning scissors work to remove weight from the hair, whereas texturising scissors add volume and movement to the style.

How To Use Hair Thinning Scissors
Re: How To Use Hair Thinning Scissors
As a rule of thumb, the more teeth or grooves on a pair of thinning scissors, the more subtly the look will be altered. If you are cutting thick hair, then a pair of scissors with fewer teeth would remove the weight more quickly.
However, when working on finer hair or when you want to add that gorgeous texture, scissors with more teeth would be best suited for the job.

One-sided or single-sided shears have notches on one side and a plain surface on the other. These are a very basic type of thinning shears that are used to thin the hair in certain areas after giving the hair cut.
These can be used to make curly hair even curlier and unruly hair smooth and well-groomed. Moreover, these thinning scissors are suitable for thinning young kid's unmanageable and thick hair.

Dual-sided thinning shears have notches on both sides. These scissors are used while giving the haircut for thinning out the sections of hair. Because these have teeth on both blades, the hair gets cut finer. These types of thinning scissors are best for achieving a softer and blended haircut. You can use them for texturizing the hair as well so that there is no uneven finish.

These shears are used to remove bulk and large chunks of hair using the wider teeth on both blades. You can use them all over the head but don't use them too close to the scalp. Wide-toothed shears can also be used to create fringed hairstyles and cutting around the nape of the neck. Also, these shears are used for grooming dogs by removing their thick fur coats.

These shears are only to be used on extremely thick, heavy hair and even so, require extreme caution. For your best shot at using this type of shear at home, make sure to have a consultation with your stylist and get the green light from them on how/where to use these in order to best serve your strands for a lighter fall. As our experts mentioned, these chunking shears can leave holes in the hair or ruin the shape entirely, so steer clear if you consider yourself a beginner.
