Due to the dangers of working around electricity and moving parts of the air conditioner, it is essential to completely turn off the power to the unit. On an external condenser / compressor, look for an external shutoff box near the unit. Inside, also turn off the power from the breaker box.

On an external condenser / compressor, remove the fan cage. Using a screwdriver or wrench, remove the fasteners and lift the cage or fan grille away from the top of the unit. By hand or with a wet / dry vacuum cleaner, clean the inside of the leaves and other debris.
Clean the fins
Remove the outer covers and use the included brush on a powerful vacuum cleaner to remove all exterior dirt. Then, using a gentle stream from a garden hose, spray the fins from the inside out to remove any build-up dirt or debris in between. Never use a pressure washer, as pressure can damage the fins. If fins are particularly dirty, use commercially available fin cleaning spray (available at home improvement centers; read and follow the manufacturer's directions).

Straighten the fins
Since any decrease in airflow through the fins can reduce efficiency, carefully straighten the bent fins using a commercially available butter knife or fin straightener. Be gentle so that the tube inside the fins is not damaged.
Clean area around the unit
Once the cleaning is finished, replace the fan cage. Remove leaves and debris outside of the condenser and cut branches and vegetation by at least two feet in all directions to ensure proper airflow around the unit. During the winter months when the condenser is not in use it is a good idea to cover the top of the unit with a piece of plywood or plastic to prevent debris from falling off. However, do not completely cover the sides of the unit, as moisture can build up inside and cause corrosion. Also, a fully covered unit encourages insects to build nests indoors. Remove any cover while the unit is operating.
